Destroyers: what are they good for?

Personally, I find Destroyers to be the ship I use less often than any other. The slow speed is what makes them so hard to use effectively. By the time they get somewhere, the battle has already been won. I think they are a little better on defense. I mean, if another Destroyer is coming to get you...why not meet it half-way with your own? Other than that...I don't know. Are there other uses for them?

I agree, and I personally never use them. My favorite ship has to be the scavenger, then the assassin, followed by by the interceptor. I feel as though speed kills, but that is just me.

I play the Gauntlet a lot. I already beat cadet and am on the next one. I use Destroyers a lot to defend. I like to put two around my base, one on each side. they kill whoever comes near. 10dmg per shot is huge. If I am facing just one enemy, then I put one outside and on at my base to kill whoever slips buy. Of course, I am a defense-first person. I try to put my money in that and think about attacking later. It';s a lot of $ for just 2 ships, but I am pretty much invulvernable to enemy attacks with this strategy.

I forget which galaxy (10 to 12'sh) where the destroyer is a must, especially when you need to either defend a planet or attack the starbase. That one galaxy showed me to never underestimate the strengths of a destroyer, especially when resources are hard to come by. My strategy is to use them to bridge or leap planets and squares, both for defense and offense. Albeit slow, their 10 attack/180 defense must be the best deal for a 40 price.

Gamespike did an excellent job balancing all the ships since I find myself using all ships depending on the situation. Only one I haven't used much so far (dies too fast) is the bomber, which may yet show its use in a future galaxy or patch/expansion. Or could just be that I'm not using it right. Perhaps its attack/defense/cost stats need to be adjusted for the right balance? :idea:

Bombers are only good for attacking starbases and cannot attack ships, hope this helps.

I never attack a starbase without at least 4 bombers in the fleet (more if there is a large defending fleet). The thing is that when the starbase is destroyed, all ships of that player blow up. So the faster you destroy the starbase, the more ships you have left in your attack fleet to head for the next base.

A bomber does 10 points of damage to the starbase per attack. A starbase can take 200 points of damage. Since bombers only attack starbases, theoretically five bombers can take out a base in four attack "cycles". With added help from the fleet, this makes bases fall quite quickly. It doesn't matter if there are 20 assasins stationed at a base. The bombers just ignore them and shoot the base, while the rest of the fleet deals with the ships.

Of course, never send bombers to a base without sufficient escort, or the defenders will rip them appart...

Thanks for all the help. Yeah, I know that bombers only hit starbases. I guess I answered my own question (sort of) since I'm having some difficulty with Galaxy 14 - Black Market. With all those destroyers and assassins on two planets at opposite ends of the map, I always come within 10-20 'health' of winning. I've tried multiple strategies to add seconds to the clock and will see if bombers are the trick.

If you meant #16 Black Market yes that is a very hard one. Took me over 10 tries to beat that one. Remember different strategies are always good. You will get it or if you need a break you can use a emissary and skip it for now and come back later.
